We’ve been taking another peek through our archives and found this great photo of Karen we wanted to share with you:
That’s Karen on the floor of the California State Assembly, shortly after she was sworn in as Speaker. And after she made history — becoming the first African American woman in our nation to lead a state legislature.
Karen served as Speaker of the Assembly during the national financial crisis and helped fast track economic stimulus legislation for Californians. She was also a champion for foster youth and for improving access to healthcare.
At each stop along her path — from Los Angeles community organizer to the State Legislature in Sacramento to the Capitol in Washington, DC — Karen’s commitment to California families has remained consistent.
