Karen’s Chairing the CBC

I have great news to share!

With your support, we were able to send Karen back to DC, where she’s been hard at work since Election Day. And now we have another important update — she has been elected to chair the Congressional Black Caucus during the 116th Congress.

This is especially exciting because for the first time in its history, the CBC will have more than 50 members. The Caucus will also chair five full House Committees and 28 House Subcommittees. Since its founding, the CBC has worked to ensure that African Americans and other marginalized communities across the country have the opportunity to achieve the American Dream.

When she begins her next term in Congress, Karen will also be Chair of the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights and International Organizations. This will allow her to continue her work to build capacity in African countries and examine voter suppression, mass incarceration and recently implemented immigration policies under the lens of global human rights abuses.

She’ll continue to serve on the House Judiciary Committee, pushing for criminal justice reform and holding the Department of Justice and the rest of the Trump administration accountable for their conduct.

Here’s what other leaders in our party are saying about her historic election:

“Truly excited to see the energy and determination Karen Bass will bring to her role as Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus.”
– Rep. Nancy Pelosi

“I couldn’t be happier to call Congresswoman Karen Bass the next chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. From fighting for criminal justice reform and child welfare to affordable health care and a stronger economy for all, Karen has devoted her life to serving California families and African-American communities across the country.”
– Tom Perez, DNC Chair

“From her days in the California General Assembly where she became the first African-American woman in U.S. history to lead a state legislative body, to her work in Congress to address both domestic and international issues affecting people of African descent, Congresswoman Bass has demonstrated tried and true leadership… There’s much work to be done next Congress to ensure equality and justice for African Americans and other marginalized communities, and I am confident Congresswoman Bass will continue to provide strong leadership in this regard.”
– Rep. Cedric Richmond, Outgoing Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus

This is all possible because of your continued support in 2018 and Karen’s commitment to the 37th District, our state, and our country. Thanks for continuing to be a part of Team Bass. I’ll be in touch with more updates in the coming weeks.

In solidarity,
